origin of lemon balm

Lemon balm is a sub-shrub native to the eastern Mediterranean basin. Over the centuries, cultivation of this medicinal plant has spread to many temperate regions.
Lemon balm is a perennial plant that grows in clumps and can be 30 centimetres to 1 metre high. Lemon balm has a lemony scent reminiscent of citronella. Its opposite, oval, embossed and coarsely toothed leaves are reminiscent of mint leaves.

Lemon balm (melissa officinalis) is a medicinal plant renowned for its many virtues and benefits, and is often used to treat a variety of health problems.

composition of lemon balm

Lemon balm contains sugars, catechic tannins and a lemon essence, rich in terpenoids and alcohols (geraniol, linalool) and especially aldehydes (citral, citronellal).

This essence gives the plant its antispasmodic, slightly sedative and carminative properties. It acts effectively on gastric and cardiac disorders of nervous origin.

Terpene derivatives in plants have bacteriostatic properties, i.e. they limit the development of bacteria.

The phenolic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic and rosmarinic) give it its choleretic action (stimulating bile secretion).

benefits of lemon balm

Thanks to its relaxing benefits, lemon balm can help to improve cognitive function. Since attention and concentration are easily disrupted by nervous tension, finding a state of relaxation can lead to calmer, more effective cognition.

Traditionally used to reduce emotional instability, lemon balm acts on the nervous system, reducing reactivity to stress and promoting emotional stability.

Lemon balm’s calming and soothing benefits help to ease intestinal spasms, support balance in the gastrointestinal tract and promote the digestive relaxation needed for efficient digestion.

Lemon balm has proven benefits for sleep, acting primarily on nervous tension and emotional balance.
